Wood or canvas
Photorealist oil painting relies on slow build-up that shows skin tone, fabric or sky with velvety softness. Here you can find photorealist oil paintings for sale, partly on canvas, partly on wood.
On a wood panel the surface becomes hard and smooth, which favors fine detail. Canvas, in contrast, brings a light texture to the picture that gives some motifs warmth. Both can convince, depending on the subject, and each ages in its own way.

The softness of oil
Because oil paint does not set at once, tones melt into one another like in a photograph with shallow depth of field. That effect is hard to copy if you can only print, and it shows above all in skin and sky.
Hanging and care
Pictures on wood should not hang in damp rooms, because wood moves. A note about the back, with hanging hardware and protection, says a lot about the care taken in making it.
