The support sets the tone
Oil appears on wood, board, aluminum or canvas and shapes each support differently. Here you can find oil pictures under 500 euro for sale where the choice of support is part of the effect.
On wood the paint stays smooth and sits dense, on board it soaks in slightly and looks more matte, on metal it lies glossy. Painters choose the ground deliberately. The technique line therefore already tells you how the surface is likely to feel.

Small formats in everyday life
Sturdy supports such as wood panels are robust and can hang or stand without a frame. An oil on a panel fits a windowsill, a shelf or a narrow wall between doors. It is easy to handle and easy to give as a gift.
Read the description closely
Good listings name the support, the ground and the varnish. If you buy a picture on wood, ask about the hanging hardware on the back. For care, a dry, soft cloth without pressure is usually enough.
