Painted rather than printed
An oil painting for under 500 euro is a true original, painted with a brush and vouched for by hand. You can find oil paintings under 500 euro for sale in many formats, from the miniature to a mid-sized canvas.
You recognize an original in oil by relief and sheen. Paint stands raised, bristles leave traces, and the surface shines more in some places than in others. A print shows an even surface where the application cannot be felt.

A start for a collection
Anyone buying a first original finds a good beginning in this band. Small formats are easy to hang and can later be joined into a group. A wall of several oils often grows over years.
What to look at
Ask about support, dimensions and varnish. Whether the back is inscribed says something about origin and making. On request you can usually get extra photos of the surface, from which brushwork and condition can be judged.
