Choosing the ground
Oil on wood, canvas or metal shows how much a support contributes to the picture. You can find oil paintings from 2,000 to 5,000 euro on different supports for sale here, with surfaces that each tell a story of their own.
On wood oil can glow in the finest glazes, on canvas it can swing with a soft stroke, on metal it stands with hard gloss. Good painters choose the support that fits the motif. In this price band the interplay is usually considered.

Weight and durability
Heavy supports call for strong anchors and a wall that can bear them. Check how the hanging is built and whether the edges are protected. Metal and wood are insensitive to loss of tension, but need room for air circulation.
Deciding with confidence
Ask for a description with support, technique, dimensions, date and signature. A certificate rounds off an original of this size. Ask about varnish and packaging for shipping, because wood panels especially need secure transport padding.
