Patience in the studio
A piece of newspaper under oil paint, a scrap of fabric in a pigment coat: mixed media with oil is its own craft discipline. You can find mixed media works with oil paint for sale from 1,000 to 2,000 euro if you value work made with hand and patience.
Oil dries from the outside in, and each layer of material changes that timing. Anyone working with collage must prime the papers first, or the oil eats stains into them. You can tell by clean edges. The contrast between glossy oil and rough, dull material is what makes these works sensual. You want to keep looking until you understand where the paint stops and the collage begins, and in doing so you see the time stored in the work.

What to expect from the price band
For originals in this price class, medium and larger formats, quality supports and layered material combinations are common. The spectrum runs from delicate works on paper to strong wooden panels.
What to look at
Ask about the support and the varnish. Fresh oil work generally needs about a year before it can be fully varnished. Knowing whether that has happened gives certainty for care and framing.
