His works have been performed at IRCAM by Pierre Boulez. Zappa is a musical writer and a great conductor. Extremely demanding, he hired only the best musicians in the world for his band.
I must say I was a professionnal lyrical singer during 30 years. And my educated ears love to explore the profusional universe of Zappa.
