Figure and style

Since antiquity the statue has stood for the human figure in space, whether strict, playful or dissolving. Statues for sale between 1,000 and 2,000 euro come in styles from abstract to naive and in materials from resin to clay.

How a statue feels depends heavily on the maker’s hand. Abstract figures reduce the body to posture, naive statues tell warmly and a little crooked, gestural pieces hold movement. The range runs from a pocket sized monument to a drawing in space.

Materials compared

Resin and rubber are light and rich in color, modeled clay looks earthy and fragile, resin allows fine detail. Weight and feel decide whether the figure belongs on a shelf or on the floor.

What to look at

A statue often stands on very little surface. Check stability, weight and base, and ask about repairs when the material is delicate. The measurement from foot to head decides whether the figure fits its spot.
