Stone sets standards for calm and endurance: a stone sculpture hardly changes, it changes the room around it instead. Stone sculptures for sale between 1,000 and 2,000 euro come in marble, granite or natural stone and in very different styles.
Marble is soft enough for fine curves and glows through its veining, granite stays hard and grainy and holds edges. Diabase is nearly black and very dense, natural stone often shows its origin in the color. Each rock has its own ring when struck and its own coolness in the hand.

Stone is heavy. Check whether the shelf board or furniture carries the load, and put felt underneath. In a garden, frost can gnaw at porous material. Ask when the piece is meant to stand outdoors.
