A figure without stone or bronze

A figure made of rubber has no hard outline; its posture comes from the material itself. Statues in rubber for sale in the 1,000 to 2,000 euro range are best judged by how the figure carries its own weight.

Classical statues rely on hardness: stone stands, bronze carries. A rubber statue plays with yielding instead. Arms bend, a head tips a few millimeters further when you move across the room. Some figures are cast solid, others hollow and supported from inside. That changes weight, grip and stability a great deal, and it explains why such figures feel a little like toys and yet entirely serious.

Plinth, footprint and dust

Check the footprint: a broad base keeps a soft figure upright, while a narrow foot often needs a core cast into it. A light plinth sets dark rubber off well. Dust clings to the slightly tacky skin, so a display case or regular dabbing with a cloth helps. Avoid direct sun and the surface stays elastic for years.
