A figure built in sections
A clay statue is often made of several parts that are carefully joined before firing. Clay statues for sale at 1,000 to 2,000 euro are best judged by posture, wall thickness and firing skin.
So that a figure does not burst in the kiln, it is built hollow and wall thickness is kept even. Arms and heads are often made separately and joined with slip. Ideally the seams are smoothed until they barely show. What remains is a figure with earthy warmth that feels less cool in living spaces than its relatives in stone.

Plinth and location
A clay statue looks best on a plinth of wood or limewashed plaster that picks up its color. Avoid damp rooms, terraces in winter and windowsills above radiators. Look for notes on the hollow interior and venting in the description, because they show that the work was done cleanly. Figures like these stand especially well in front of a calm, light wall that does not outshine their earthy tones.
