Soft-focus riddles
Surreal motifs in oil pastel join the accuracy of drawing to the softness of chalk. Paintings in the surreal style with oil pastel are for sale here, at prices around 5,000 to 10,000 euro or in combination with oil on canvas.
In oil pastel, surreal scenes look as if seen through mist. Gradients of orange, violet and blue create spaces without a border, and fine lines set a sharp memory in their midst. This tension between softness and precision is the appeal.

Support and format
Paper, board and canvas carry surreal oil pastel pictures. On canvas with an oil or acrylic ground they gain substance, on paper lightness. Mind the information on support and ground, since framing and location depend on it.
Care
Waxy surfaces pick up dust and fingerprints easily. Frame with glass and spacing, and hang the picture in cool rooms with mild light. Avoid heating air so the chalk does not soften.
