Old subjects, soft stroke
Classical painting rests on calm composition, muted tones and carefully modeled forms, and oil pastel can render all of that with surprising tenderness. Classical oil pastel paintings for sale come with traditional subjects drawn in a soft, grainy stroke.
Still life, landscape, portrait: the classical genres demand patience in building light and shade. With oil pastel this happens in many thin layers that blend easily into one another. The result looks less glossy than an oil painting, but every movement of the hand stays visible. The wax content keeps the colors rich and never lets them harden completely.

Hanging and framing
A plain wooden frame with a mat and glass suits the classical look and protects the delicate surface at the same time. Keep the picture away from radiators, since wax softens with heat.
Look first, then choose
If you want a sturdier surface, related pictures turn up in acrylic on canvas. To keep the budget firmly set, have a look at pieces under 500 euro; small pastel formats are a classic way in.
