Cut, paste, paint over
Collage assembles pictures from found pieces: paper, fabric, photos, paint. Under 500 euro you can find collage paintings for sale that join scraps, layers and painting into a new surface.
The technique runs from Dada to the present. The artist tears or cuts papers, arranges them, glues them down and paints over or between. Edges, rims and overlaps tell of the working process. Every found piece brings its own color, texture and origin.

Small but full of detail
Collages reward closeness. In a hallway or on a shelf, discovering details is worthwhile: a line of type, a piece of a sewing pattern, a street map. A frame with a spacer keeps glass from pressing on raised parts.
More paths
Further routes lead through mixed-media, acrylic or paper. Ask what the papers were glued with and whether the adhesive is age-resistant. Collages age differently from pure painting: papers can yellow and glue can darken. The description should therefore name the materials, and a spot without constant sun keeps the colors fresh longer.
