Weave and ground
Acrylic on canvas is the contemporary standard because the fabric gives slightly, the paint bonds well and the picture goes up on the wall easily. Acrylic paintings on canvas for 2,000 to 5,000 euro for sale are, in practice, a choice for larger formats with presence.
A good canvas is primed with gesso so the paint does not sink in. The tighter the weave, the finer the surface; the coarser it is, the more texture stays visible. That affects how strongly brushstrokes appear in the end. Gesso can also be tinted, so the ground itself carries a color that later glimmers through thin layers.

Tension and stretcher
Check that the fabric is drawn taut over a sturdy stretcher bar. On larger formats a crossbar prevents the picture from bowing. A painted edge all around lets you skip the frame.

In this range, original works are often large pieces that shape a room. Ask about the lightfastness of the pigments and about a protective varnish, since both decide how the picture looks over the years.
