Stroke, warmth, cool
Impressionist oil painting on a large scale plays with distance: up close a swarm of strokes, from afar water, sky and leaves. Impressionist oil paintings on canvas for sale from 5,000 to 10,000 euro are best judged by stroke handling, glaze and color balance.
Many painters in this vein set complementary colors so close together that a vibrating impression arises. Violet in the shadow, yellow in the light, orange at the edge. Oil makes these transitions soft without letting them go flat. The rhythm of the strokes changes with the motif: short and dabbing for foliage, long and horizontal for water.

Hanging at the right distance
Make sure the room offers enough distance to the wall. A viewing distance of a few yards lets the overall impression come together. A spot opposite a window gives the picture natural daylight.
Care and paperwork
Oil pictures of this size should carry a varnish that repels dust and deepens colors. Clarify before buying whether and when it was varnished, and ask for provenance details if there are any. A frame in pale wood or with a gold edge can also steer the overall impression.
