The light comes from the paper
Pure watercolor lives on white paper that is never painted over, only left open. Anyone who wants to find watercolor paintings for sale made entirely of wash will see in every stroke how little can be corrected afterwards.
The brightest passages of a watercolor are bare paper. That means planning before the first brushstroke decides the result. Wet into wet gives soft transitions, while dry ground keeps edges crisp. How many layers lie on top of each other shows in the depth of the dark tones.

Frame, glass and wall
Watercolors belong under glass, ideally with an acid-free mat and UV protection. Keep them out of strong sun, because pigments can fade over the years. Especially inviting are impressionist watercolors with shimmering light and surreal watercolors, where soft color carries dream imagery.
Water, time and layers
Good watercolor looks easy and is in fact planned: when does a layer dry, how much water can the paper carry, where should an edge stay soft? Study the washes in large areas. A smooth, cloudy sky without water rims reveals a sure hand.
