Thin layers, long work
Among the most demanding work on paper is photorealistic watercolor, since water-based paint forgives nothing. If you want photorealistic watercolors for sale, you are after sheets where you can tell hairs, water drops and reflections apart one by one.
The paint goes on in glazes, and each has to dry before the next follows. The painter builds dark tones slowly and reserves the bright lights from the start. Precision comes from planning, not from reworking. Even small errors would show, which makes the assurance of such sheets all the more impressive.

Effect in the frame
A clean mat draws the eye to the depth of detail. Choose a frame that holds back, black or natural. Lighting from the side avoids glare on the glass.
What to look out for
Ask about the paper type and whether the sheet was stretched before painting. With fine works a photo in raking light is worthwhile, showing the structure of the glazes. Age and condition of the paper should be stated too.
