Black with many grays
Charcoal is charred wood you hold in your hand: it smudges under a thumb and lightens again under an eraser. Charcoal drawings for sale under 500 euro cover many styles, from modern to photorealistic.
Vine charcoal is light and gray, compressed charcoal dense and black. The style pages stretch from finely worked photorealistic portraits to sheets laid out in a graphic, illustrative and typographic manner, where charcoal suddenly behaves like printing ink. The sheet shows how much handwriting lives in a single material.

Hanging with glass and space
Charcoal sits loosely on paper, so a frame with glass and a spacer is sensible. A mat keeps the paper flat and gives the black a pale halo. Sun hurts little, dampness a lot, so skip bathrooms and kitchens. On a white wall the black looks strongest, on beige it reads softer.
Fixative and transport
Ask whether the piece has been fixed, and have packing and hanging explained. At the under 500 euro tier, studies and mid-size sheets often lead among originals. Check for marks on the back as well.
