Fine clay, earthy loam
Clay and loam sound like relatives and still differ: fine-grained clay is denser, loam coarser and rich in iron. Sculptures in clay and loam for sale let you see that difference in the firing.
Fine clay fires dense, rings brightly and takes delicate glazes. Loam brings sand and iron and turns reddish to brown in the kiln, with a surface that stays grippier. Sculptures that combine both often show a soft transition between smooth skin and grainy structure. Looking closely, you can recognize the type by grain and color.

A way in are abstract forms or the 500 to 1,000 euro bracket. Look for firing temperature, wall thickness and weight in the description. Hollow spaces need venting, otherwise pieces can burst. At home, dry dusting is enough, whereas water does harm over time. The color of the body shows at the foot, where the glaze ends; a look there reveals more about the material than any photo of the front.
