Line that was bitten
An etching begins with a copper plate and ends with a sheet full of fine, velvety lines. Etchings for sale under 500 euro suit you if you appreciate the precise craft of intaglio.
The drawing is scratched into a protective ground, acid eats the exposed areas, ink fills the depressions. Damp paper draws it out under high pressure. That gives the line its typical, slightly raised blackness. Anyone familiar with copper recognizes from the line work whether the print belongs to the early pulls.

Depth in small space
With hatching and aquatint, gray values can be built up that nearly recall photography. Especially appealing are etchings that work photorealistically or graphically, often in small formats viewed from close by. A calm white in the mat lets the lines stand out clearly.
Plate mark and edition
The embossed plate mark belongs to the original and should stay visible under the mat. Look for pencil signature, number, and title. With ink or copper, many sheets can be pulled in an edition, but few are identical. At this price expect rather small to medium plates, which hang easily in a series.
