Gray from lines
For a photorealist effect, etching is an old tool: a needle scratches lines into the plate, acid deepens them, and a gray value grows from countless line crossings. Photorealist etchings for sale under 500 euro offer subjects as exact as a photo yet warm in feel.
The denser the hatching, the darker the tone. Aquatint adds soft areas, cross-hatching builds shadows. The result looks like a photograph from afar and stays legible as a drawing up close. For this, a ground is often applied to the copper plate, which the needle opens line by line.

Making it visible in the frame
The plate mark, a slight depression around the image, belongs to a genuine etching. A mat should not hide it. Choose a white mat with some margin so the paper can breathe. You can feel this craft in the impression: the line has pressure, a start and an end, as in a drawing.
Tips on buying
Ask about the plate size, the edition size, and which impression number you are looking at. Early impressions are usually finer, though under 500 euro this rarely decides much and should be stated in the description. An etching needs paper with weight, which absorbs the moisture of printing and stays flat.
