Colored flats, hard edges
No printing method shows color as plainly as the linocut, because each area is rolled once and pressed once. Anyone who wants color linocuts for sale gets sheets with strong, clearly bounded tones.
Linoleum can be cut in stages. Print the lightest color first, carve away parts, then print the next color: the image builds from interlocking layers, much like a stepped structure. The printing itself can be done by hand with a baren or in a press, and each leaves a slightly different surface.

Embossing and plate mark
In printing, the block presses slightly into the paper. This shallow embossing marks hand-printed sheets and shows that press pressure, not a digital printer, was at work. In raking light it is easy to see. Rich tones do especially well on light walls, where they set a clear accent.
