Frame and place
Classical oil pictures need a frame that matches the era of the motif or deliberately contrasts. Do not hang them in full sun or above radiators. Soft light and moderate room temperature keep picture and varnish stable for a long time.
Before buying
Check craquelure, edges and the back, as far as the description covers them. Ask about dating, signature and condition of the varnish. If you buy a newly painted picture, ask about drying through.
