Oil, minus the pathos

Oil on canvas often stands for tradition. In modern hands it turns open and loose: thin paint that lets the white ground glow through, next to thick ribbons laid down with a palette knife. The colors dry slowly and melt into each other, which allows fine transitions.

Light on the paint layer
Depending on the binder, oil paint reads silky or matte. Hang the picture so window light falls from the side, and brush direction and layer thickness come forward. Direct sun and a radiator underneath are poor neighbors for oil paint.
Drying time and varnish
Ask whether the picture is fully dry and varnished. A varnish protects against dust but goes on only after many months of curing. Dust is best removed with a dry soft brush, and cleaning products are better left out entirely.
