Speed in the stroke

Gestural charcoal painting shows how the body takes part in drawing: swinging out, braking, setting down. Paintings in the expressive and gestural style with charcoal are for sale here, in small studies as well as in room-filling canvases.

Quick movements give thin, splintering lines, slow ones broad, cloudy bands. Charcoal makes these differences visible at once. Smudges and handprints add to it, revealing the making and keeping the picture immediate. Sheets and canvases alike keep the traces of the hand honest, because charcoal cannot hide a hesitation.

From price to technique

Gestural works with charcoal exist in the tiers 1,000 to 2,000 euro and 2,000 to 5,000 euro. Technique-wise, acrylic and acrylic on canvas turn up. Both give the charcoal a counterweight of color.

Hanging with distance

Gestural pictures need space so their force does not overwhelm. A free wall and even light from the side are ideal. Protect the charcoal with glass or fixative, especially in a spot with lots of movement.
