Feeling becomes contour
Expressionism paints what a person feels, not what the eye sees, with rough lines and strong contrasts. Paintings in the style of Expressionism with charcoal are for sale here, and the deep black underlines every edge.
Charcoal is the ideal medium for expressive drawing: it responds to pressure, breaks and splinters. Figures, faces and landscapes gain distorted, angular outlines. From a few hard lines grows a tension that no brush produces as quickly.

Letting it work in the room
Expressionist charcoal works are rarely decorative in the light sense, they demand attitude. A bright room with clear furniture and plenty of wall gives them counterweight. A black or dark wood frame strengthens the force, a white one softens it.
Technical notes
Charcoal can be reworked but not repaired. Ask whether the work was fixed, whether it hangs under glass and how large the gap to the pane is. Paper with structure carries charcoal better than smooth paper.
