Smooth transitions with a fast material
Photorealism reproduces what a lens sees, but by hand and with patience. Photorealistic acrylic pictures for sale under 500 euro are mostly smaller studies in which the technique is easy to follow.
Acrylic dries quickly and makes soft gradients harder, so photorealists work with retarder, thin glazes and fine brushes. The results are surfaces in which reflections, skin or metal look deceptively real. With growing experience you notice how demanding smooth transitions are. A well painted gradient on a bottle, a drop of water or a cheek is the result of many thin layers. You cannot see that in the picture, yet it makes up its quality.

Format and distance
In small formats the effect lies in the detail. A picture of this kind may hang at eye level so that viewers can step closer. Direct light is less favorable, since reflections on varnish disturb the fine transitions.
How to spot good work
Look at edges, shadows and highlights: do they look natural, without hard jumps? A matte varnish helps to avoid distracting reflections.
