Depth through layers
Oil painting has a long tradition, and in the highest price class you can see why: fine transitions, deep colors and a surface that reads differently up close than from afar. If you want oil paintings over 10,000 euro for sale, compare the handling of paint and the condition.
Oil dries slowly and stays malleable. Painters use that for wet-in-wet transitions, for glazes and for spots where light seems to come from within the picture. That is exactly what separates an original from a printed poster, whose surface stays flat and even.

At home in a room
A large oil painting handles strong wall colors as well as pale ones. Hang it at eye level with light from the side, and leave room around furniture so the surface can breathe and no radiator air blows straight along the picture.
Condition and background
A note on surrealist or other influences helps with classification. Ask about the signature, the year and the state of the varnish; sometimes the back of the canvas tells you more.
