Weave and ground
Acrylic on canvas is the contemporary standard because the fabric gives slightly, the paint bonds well and the picture goes up on the wall easily. Acrylic paintings on canvas for 2,000 to 5,000 euro for sale are, in practice, a choice for larger formats with presence.
A good canvas is primed with gesso so the paint does not sink in. The tighter the weave, the finer the surface; the coarser it is, the more texture stays visible.
