Between drawing and painting
Oil pastel is pigment bound in oil and wax and never dries completely. Oil pastel paintings for sale give you a picture with a soft, direct stroke that looks almost drawn.
The crayon is handled like a pencil but applied so densely that it builds an opaque layer of paint. You can blur transitions with a finger or a rag, loosen colors with mineral spirits and scrape surfaces back with a knife. The result is a surface with visible movement.

Color and light
The tones are juicy, almost creamy. On a light ground they glow, on a dark ground they look like embers. Do not hang oil pastel in direct sunlight or next to a radiator.
Frame and protection
Because the surface stays soft, an oil pastel piece usually belongs behind glass or receives a fixative. Read in the description which solution was chosen and what the dimensions are.
