Less motif, more material
Minimalism strips things down until only surface, edge and spacing remain. You can look for minimalist mixed media for sale when you want that reduction to feel tactile rather than cold.
Where there is hardly anything to see, every detail counts: a strip of paper, a trace of plaster, a breath of pigment on a coarse ground. Mixed media lets an artist build tension with very few means, since materials differ in sheen and grain even when every color stays quiet.

Calm on the wall
A large, pale wall with a single piece on it shows this kind of art at its best. Side light brings out fine relief, front light flattens it. In the listing, look for dimensions, depth and whether the edges are part of the design. A more painterly take sits under painting.
Format and edge
With minimalist pieces the format decides everything. Ask about the depth of the piece and whether the sides are painted so it can hang without a frame. A small picture on a large wall can have more impact than a mid-sized one that crowds the room.
