Handwriting, not likeness
A gestural pen drawing is handwriting in its purest form: rhythm, pressure and speed all show. You can find expressive pen and ink drawings in the mixed media field for sale, which suits anyone who likes to watch a sheet being made.
Unlike a careful study, this is about feeling and motion. The nib pulls long arcs, breaks off, starts over and lets ink dots fall where they fall. Mixed additions such as chalk, ink thinned in water or torn paper turn the sheet into a layered piece. In each zone you can see how fast or slow the work went.

Paper, mat, light
In drawings, the paper decides how a line sounds. Absorbent paper lets ink feather, smooth paper keeps it sharp. Ask about the sort and frame with a gap to the glass, so nothing sticks. A spot without harsh sun and without damp keeps the ink stable if you plan to keep the sheet for years.
Calm around the sheet
A lively sheet gets room when the space around it stays clear. A slim frame in white, wood or black is enough. Check the signature and, if there is one, any detail about an edition.
