Depth as a design tool
The bas-relief sits between picture and sculpture: it hangs on the wall and still reaches into the room. You can find abstract mixed media bas-reliefs for sale from 1,000 to 2,000 euro, made in wood, plaster, metal or paper.
In an abstract relief, depth decides the effect: what stands forward, what lies back, where does a shadow fall? Mixed media combines surfaces and heights, smooth beside rough, lacquered beside matte. The movement of light across the day makes the work a changing event on the wall.

Hanging and lighting
Reliefs need a wall that can bear load and a secure fixing, because weight and depth exceed those of flat pictures. Side light, from a wall lamp or a window, casts shadows that stress the form.
Questions for the description
Read the details on depth in centimeters and on weight. Look for notes on hanging, transport and cleaning in the gaps. If you have children or pets, factor in the height of the hanging.
