Originals in this selection, Bas-relief, Material Wood, 2,000 to 5,000 euro.

Formats from 52 x 43 to 80 x 80 cm.

Planes and joints

A relief made of several wooden planes changes with every step you take past it, since shadows and edges shift. You can find mixed media wood bas-reliefs for sale from 2,000 to 5,000 euro if you appreciate wall pieces with depth and construction.

Between these amounts, originals often come with larger formats and thought-out sequences of planes. Wood is milled, stacked, painted, overlaid with metal or paper. Every plane casts its own shadow. You often meet reliefs of milled wood overlaid with paint, wax or metal. The depth usually stands just a few centimeters off the wall, yet it suffices for the work to keep changing its face over the day.

Directing the light

Place a relief where light falls from the side, or where you can aim a spotlight at an angle. Oblique light makes grooves and steps clear. Flat ceiling light takes the depth away.

Practical questions

Ask for details on depth, weight, wood species and hanging system. Reliefs with many parts are often heavier than they look. A wall mount that carries across the whole back makes sense.
