Planes, edges, multiple views
Cubism breaks things into planes and shows them from several sides at once. Cubist drawings for sale from 1,000 to 2,000 euro appear in pencil, graphite and pastel, often with dense compositional work.
On the sheet, faces, guitars or cityscapes are broken into facets that overlap. With pencil the edges stay sharp, with pastel the planes gain color and body. The eye puts the dismantled parts back together. Between facets, small gaps of bare paper often work like breathing spaces.
