Soft precision
Photorealism in charcoal sounds contradictory, since the material is thought to be coarse, and yet it can produce pictures of startling softness. You can buy photorealistic charcoal drawings for sale under 500 euro if you are after craft in a small format.
With eraser, stump and finely sharpened compressed charcoal, highlights are taken out and depths are built. Faces, cloths or window glass gain a plasticity reminiscent of black-and-white photography. Unlike pencil, the tone stays velvety rather than metallic.
