charcoal drawing on paper
Original artwork description
Executed entirely in charcoal, After the Silence explores the tension between intimacy and distance. Cropped closely and composed with deliberate asymmetry, the portrait draws the viewer into an encounter that feels immediate yet remains impossible to fully define. The direct gaze offers neither invitation nor resistance, leaving the emotional narrative deliberately unresolved.
The drawing is built through successive layers of charcoal, allowing darkness to become an active element rather than simply a background. Light reveals only fragments of the figure, while deep blacks dissolve the rest into atmosphere. Loose strands of hair and softened edges introduce movement against the stillness of the composition, creating a delicate balance between precision and spontaneity.
Rather than depicting a specific individual, After the Silence reflects on presence itself—those fleeting moments when emotion exists beyond language and identity becomes something sensed rather than explained.
