charcoal drawing on paper
Original artwork description
Drawn entirely in charcoal, The Long Night explores the intensity of a fleeting human expression. A strong beam of light cuts across the face, revealing only fragments while allowing the surrounding darkness to hold the rest. Rather than describing a specific person, the portrait invites the viewer into a moment of quiet tension, where vulnerability and resilience coexist.
Working in charcoal allows light and shadow to become the primary subjects. Deep blacks absorb the figure into the background, while luminous passages emerge through careful subtraction and layering. The result is a portrait that feels suspended between concealment and revelation.
Rather than offering a fixed narrative, The Long Night leaves space for interpretation. The gaze is unwavering, but its meaning remains open—an encounter shaped as much by the viewers own experiences as by the drawing itself.
