Area and contour
Charcoal gives the graphic drawing weight, and the pencil sharpens the edge afterwards. You can buy graphic charcoal drawings with pencil for sale here for rooms where black and white may speak plainly.
Illustrative and typographic means here that shapes are placed decisively. Charcoal fills areas deep black or leaves them as a grey veil, and the pencil draws the line, the letter, the contour on top. Together they give a poster-like impression, but by hand. The contrasts are what make it appealing: here the soft, almost powdery area, there the hard, precise line that bounds it and gives the sheet an order.

Protecting the surface
Charcoal sits loosely and rubs off easily. With graphic sheets that is especially noticeable because the edges are meant to stay sharp. A frame with glass and a spacer is therefore a must, and fixative only after talking with the maker.
Contrast in the room
On white walls such sheets are strong, on grey walls calmer. A slim frame in black-stained wood picks up the character of the work.
