Soft beside hard
Charcoal meets pencil: one material delivers depth, the other fine drawing. You can buy charcoal and pencil drawings for sale here, including in styles such as impressionism or graphic and illustrative.
Charcoal is porous and absorbs light; graphite has a slight sheen. Both on one sheet make an alternation of matte and shimmering zones that comes alive under raking light. Connoisseurs see from this that two materials were truly used. Paper choice matters too: a sheet with slight tooth absorbs charcoal eagerly, while smooth paper shows the pencil sharper and the charcoal softer.

Working with contrast
Because of the deep blacks, these sheets suit rooms with lots of daylight. On a bright wall they give strong contrast, which a cream-white mat softens.
Storing and framing
Charcoal dust does not belong on your hands or on the glass. Have the sheet framed with space to the pane, and store unframed work flat between acid-free tissue.
