Smudging and setting

The charcoal is rubbed with a finger or cloth until it lies on the paper like fog. The pencil then sets accents over it: a branch, an edge, a glint of light. The tension between soft and sharp creates the impressionist effect. It is the contrast that creates air in the picture, and a trained eye reads the breadth of a landscape from a few rubbed areas.

Depth at home
The velvety blacks of charcoal give the sheet weight, so it does especially well on pale walls. On a stairwell or a gallery wall alongside other prints and drawings it shows its best side.
Care in mind
Both materials react to touch. Have the sheet framed before you hang it, and do not lean it unprotected against a wall.
