What charcoal can do
Charcoal is black, but never just one black: it ranges from thin haze to deep velvet. Charcoal drawings for sale come in many styles, from photorealistic to gestural, and in the price tiers under 500 euro and 500 to 1,000 euro.
It goes on soft or hard, can be smudged, lifted and taken off again. With an eraser, black turns into light. Old masters used charcoal for preparatory drawings, today it stands as a medium in its own right. The effect depends heavily on paper: rough paper gives grain, smooth paper fine gradations.
