While in Lyme Regis Dorset it was possible to get very close to the herring gulls. I was able to leisurely study lots of them in varying poses. I wanted to pare back this painting to show only the essence of a gull.
Acrylic on canvas board, this painting has a base coat of burnt orange or raw sienna and consists of further opaque pigments with subsequent layers of colour washes. This building of the work gives it texture and controlled vibrance. It has one coat of Winsor Newton Satin UV Varnish
