Worked directly at the block
Wood as technique and wood as material coincide when the sculptor works directly at the block. You can find abstract carved wood sculptures for sale if you want to read the process in the form.
Wood sculpting in the narrow sense is subtraction: layer by layer the form emerges. In abstraction there is no model, so the artist decides at the material where edge and curve belong. You can still sense the decisions in the finished object.

Furrows, notches, polish
Some pieces show tool marks, others are sanded to a silky gloss. Both are stances: trace as expression, or smoothness as calm. Check whether oil or wax was applied and whether fine hairline cracks were allowed for.
Space and care
Set the sculpture on a level, dry surface. Remove dust with a dry, soft cloth, and now and then add a thin coat of care wax. Ask about species and drying time, and have the dimensions stated to match them against your furniture.
