A figure from one trunk
A wooden statue has face, posture and warmth, and each piece stays different because the wood brings its own figure. You can look for wood statues for sale if you are after figures made by hand.
Traditionally a statue is carved from a single block so the fibers run through the figure. That gives strength to arms and legs. Today glued constructions exist too, where clean, invisible joints are what to watch for.

Surface and color
Some figures stay natural, others are painted, patinated or blackened. A painted finish recalls baroque saints, raw wood recalls folk art. The listing should say what the wood was treated with so you can care for it properly.
Planning the line of sight
A figure looks at you or at the room. Decide where it should look, and choose a spot where furniture does not cramp it. At eye level it feels friendlier, on the floor it is more like a housemate.
