Choosing and pointers
Look for details of material and surface. Wood does not like wet, plaster does not like knocks, stone does not like acid. Ask about weight, dimensions and footprint, and whether the work is signed. If you want to start a series, look for pieces of similar scale that join into a group on a shelf. The date of making and a signature also give clues for placing the work.
