One impression, one picture
The monotype is a print that cannot be repeated, and with charcoal it becomes especially soft. Monotypes with charcoal for sale under 500 euro are each a one-off.
In monotype you draw or paint on a smooth plate and then print it once. With charcoal, soft shadows and grainy surfaces arise that recall lithography. A second, weaker impression is possible but no duplicate. That makes it possible to acquire in this range an original that does not exist in a series and is handmade from the first line to the last.

Because every sheet is singular in its drawing, several together also work like a play of variations. Mat and plain frame are enough. Avoid direct light, since charcoal stays sensitive.
Checking marks of authenticity
Monotypes are not editions, so instead of a fraction the note often reads one of a kind. Look for the signature, date and details on the paper. Ask about fixing, since charcoal clings only loosely.
