Material as part of the composition
Modern painting and mixed media are close relatives, because both share the courage to experiment: paper, paint, sand, or thread all find room in one picture. If you look for modern mixed-media paintings under 500 euro for sale, you probably want a surface with some tactile quality.

Tension from contrast
Matte against glossy, rough against smooth, light against dark: the effect lives on such opposites. A picture like this needs no decoration around it, since a free wall and light from the side are enough.
Question the durability
The more materials, the more the details matter. Ask about adhesives, lightfastness, and sealing. At the under-500-euro level, originals in this technique are usually a handy size, often worked on board or wood.
