Fast and slow

Acrylic delivers strong, opaque fields that can be reworked after a short wait. Oil brings sheen and soft transitions. Gestural painters use the difference to switch between hard edges and smeared borders. Because acrylic cures water-resistant, glazes and oil layers can be set over it without destroying the underpainting.

Effect in the living space
The mix of matte and glossy application makes the picture sensitive to light: seen from the left it looks different than from the right. Test the spot in daylight and in the evening. That allows strong contrast between smooth and rough zones.
Notes on durability
Oil has to sit over acrylic, never the other way round. Ask whether it was built this way and whether the surface is varnished, since mixed works need one uniform protective coat.
