Chalk on an acrylic ground
Pastel and acrylic on canvas make an unusual but appealing pairing: under the chalk lies a ground that gives it hold. Paintings in this combination under 500 euro are for sale here.
Pastel only clings to surfaces with tooth. An acrylic layer with fine sand or pumice gel creates it on canvas. On it the chalk can be applied as on sandpaper, intense and rich. The colors stay matte but grow deeper than on smooth paper.

With originals, smaller canvases and handy formats are usual here. If you look for an expressive motif, watch for strong strokes and dense color. Note the information about the ground in the description.
Protection and framing
Even on canvas, pastel stays loose. A frame with glass and spacing is recommended, even if it feels unusual for canvases. Alternatively the picture hangs on a wall without drafts and without contact. Dust is only blown off gently.
